Trip description

AAYUBOWAN! Great many things have been said about Sri Lanka. The Arabs called it Serendib from which originated that lovely English word – “Serendipity” that so wonderfully describes the occurrence of events by a happy coincidence. Marco Polo described Sri Lanka, then known as Ceylon, as being “for its size, better circumstanced than any island in the World”.
Endless palm-lined beaches, famed ancient Buddhist ruins, cooler mountainous terrain punctuated with waterfalls, vivid green tea plantations, oodles of elephants, friendly and welcoming people, delectable food, all make Sri Lanka irresistible.
Come experience and enjoy Sri Lanka with us!
Day 01 | Arrive in Colombo. Transfer to Dambulla via. Pinnawala {Cultural Trail}
On arrival at Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo, you’ll be transferred to the hotel / home-stay in Dambulla. En-route, we visit the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage which is home to the abandoned elephants. Check-in to the home-stay / hotel & relax for some time before visiting Dambulla Cave Rock Temple dating to the First Century B.C. that houses some of the most unique mural paintings and sculptures in magnificently constructed five cave temples flanking the golden temple of Dambulla. Spend rest of the day at your leisure. Overnight stay in Dambulla. (–/–/–)
Day 02 | Sigiriya – Polonnaruwa – Sigiriya {Cultural Trail continues…}
We start the day with a climb to the Sigiriya Rock, also known as ‘Lion Rock’ which dates back nearly five thousand years to the Mesolithic era. A challenging climb of approximately 1200 steps of varying steepness leads to the top. It is well worth the effort once you get to witness the stupendous views over the jungle and ruins of the ancient city below. It’s better to start the hike early in the morning when the temperature is cooler. From here we head to Pidurangala from where we can have an unobstructed view of Sigiriya Rock.
Post lunch, we visit another UNESCO World Heritage Site of Polonnaruwa which was the second capital and the seat of government from the eleventh to the thirteenth century. It comprises, besides the Brahmanic monuments built by the Cholas, the monumental ruins of the fabulous garden-city created by Parakramabahu I in the 12th century. Overnight stay in Sigiriya. (B/–/–)
Day 03 | Sigiriya – Kandy {Head to Highlands}
After Breakfast, we start to Kandy, the last capital of the ancient kings' era of Sri Lanka is set on a plateau surrounded by mountains, which are home to tea plantations and bio diverse rainforest. We visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa), the golden-roofed shrine considered one of the Holiest Buddhist sites in Sri Lanka and is an important pilgrimage destination. Evening, we get to experience the Kandiyan Cultural Dance & Drumming Show at cost. (a bit touristy with the crowd rushing to catch the vantage seats). Then, we visit the Kandy Lake and take a leisurely stroll around it. Overnight stay at Kandy. (B/–/–)
Day 04 | Kandy – Ella {Train through the Tea Gardens}
Today morning, we take a train to Ella* which takes about 6½ hours. Supposedly, one of the World’s most spectacular train routes passing through lush tea plantations, endless mountain views, green valleys, meandering streams, stunning waterfalls, and pine forests. You’ll love this journey by train even if you’re not a train-person.
Ella, located about 1000 meters above sea level is a small laidback town surrounded by hills covered with cloud forests and tea plantations – an ideal place to spend a couple of days. On reaching Ella, we’ll check into our home-stay / hotel. After relaxing for some time, we visit Lipton’s Seat & Dambatenne Tea Estate. Overnight stay at Ella or Bandarawela. (B/–/–)
* 1st / 2nd Class Tickets. The class of ticket depends on the availability. In case of non-availability of tickets, we would be taking the road journey.
Day 05 | Ella {Hiking Day}
After early breakfast, hike up the Little Adam’s Peak for a stunning view of Ella Gap – a gorge full of beautiful waterfalls and stunning backdrops. Upon return and after lunch, we hike to the 9-arch Bridge also known as “The Bridge in the Sky” is a famous bridge located between the stations of Ella and Demodara. The bridge was built during WWI using only bricks, cement and stone, a perfect example of colonial influence in Sri Lankan architecture. If we are lucky, we can also witness a train crossing the bridge which is a delight to watch. Overnight stay at Ella or Bandarawela. (B/–/–)
Day 06 | Ella – Sinharaja {Simply Fall in Love with Nature}
Today, we bid goodbye to the hills and drive to Sinharaja en-route covering an impressive waterfall. Continuing on through the Ella Gap we then enjoy some spectacular mountain views as we take long drive of about 5 hours towards the wet zone of Sabaragamuwa Province in the western foothills of the central highlands. It is an area with tropical rainforests, winding rivers and an undulating terrain.
We reach the UNESCO-protected World Heritage Site and an International Biosphere Reserve of Sinharaja, a treasure trove for birdwatchers and nature lovers which provides diverse habitats for numerous species of endemic fauna and flora not found anywhere else in the world. The reserve covers an area of about 11,187 hectares of lowland rainforest and is a valuable storehouse of scientific knowledge. Take a relaxing walk to explore the surrounding areas or simply relax at the home-stay. NOTE: The home-stay here is simple but clean & comfortable. (B/–/–)
Day 07 | Sinharaja – Mirissa {It’s Beach Time}
Wake up to the sounds of bird chirping and set out on a 2-3 hour easy trek with a local guide through this magnificent jungle, the last surviving stretch of virgin rainforest on the island. It is a truly enriching experience. Accompanied by nothing but the sound of gushing waterfalls, gurgling streams and rustling leaves, look out for exotic birds, vibrant reptiles and eye-catching butterflies moving through the trees and absorb the atmosphere of utter tranquility as the surroundings stir the senses. After a delicious lunch, we set off to Mirissa, a crescent shaped stunning beach in the South West Coast.
Crack open a coconut, slip into a hammock and rock gently in the breeze, allowing the hours to slip calmly by. Stay relaxed and enjoy the sun, sea and sand after a long road journey. Overnight stay at Mirissa / Matara. (B/–/–)
Day 08 | Mirissa – Hikkaduwa {Sun, Sea & Sand}
Today we head on a Whale Watching trip, at extra cost subject to the weather and sea conditions. If you’re looking for some adventure, you can do Snorkeling in the bay where you can see beautiful reef fish, corals and even the occasional turtle and basking shark. Or choose to engage yourself in any other water-sport of your choice – Scuba Diving, Surfing, etc. at extra cost.
Later, we drive to Hikkaduwa en-route visiting the Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site built in 1588 by the Portuguese before being extensively fortified by the Dutch in the mid 1600s. Take an interesting stroll through this heritage monument that boasts of a colorful history.
On the way, we’ll be able to witness fishermen perched up on a pole, balancing on it to catch fishes (stilt fishing). We visit a Turtle Hatchery to witness the Sea Turtles and possibly release a few baby turtle to the Ocean.
Watch the sun sink beyond the horizon and offer up a spectacularly vivid sunset. The nightlife in Hikkaduwa is a pretty mellow affair. Opt for one of the relaxed seafront lounges, enjoy a pre-dinner drink, and relish the stunning ocean vistas. Overnight stay at Hikkaduwa. (B/–/–)
Day 09 | Bid Adieu!!!
The morning is free at leisure until transfer to Colombo’s Bandaranaike International Airport for the departure flight. We have the option to take a boat ride in Madu River Wetland or head straight to Bentota for some water sports.
